Wolframalpha.com - Best of the Web

Wolframalpha.com - The most useful search engine you've never heard of.

Wolfram Alpha; you type your input or question and it produces a result. It sounds rather simple put in those words, but simply, that is what it does. It's the +10 trillion pieces of data it has in it's knowledge base that makes it rather complex.

Unlike search engine main-players Google and Yahoo, Wolfram sets out to find you the information you need, not the websites you want. For example you can type in any mathematical algorithm and it will calculate it instantaneously. This is a direct result of 20 years of research by Wolfram building their own programming code named 'Mathematica' which is run on super computers.

But it doesn't stop with algorithms. Wolfram has access to almost limitless numerical data on whatever you want. Want to know how many people live in the small province of Bam in the south of Iran? 99,268. Want to know the thermal conductivity of the element Boron? 27W/(mk) Want to know the standard frequency of the musical note F-sharp? 369.994 Hertz. The amount of information is incomprehensible, to say the least.

There is one thing that does worry me about Wolfram Alpha though. I foresee a future where parents can put there kids down in front of Wolfram Alpha to do a school project, and not have to worry that their kids project about 'Human Anatomy' will bring up scandalous image results like Google did back in their day.

I mean, it's great news for parents, but kids are going to HATE it.

Hypem.com - Best of the Web

Hypem.com - If your always want to be 'that person that tells all their friends about awesome songs before they hear them on radio' this site will blow your mind.

The Hype Machine lives up to it's name, bringing you the newest and most popular music tracks on the internet. It is a 'music blog aggregator' which, for all you less web savvy people, means it grabs all the tracks from thousands of blogs around the web and put them in easy to navigate ranks.

The most popular tracks on the net a ranked from 1 to 100, but this doesn't mean that they are the newest tracks out there. If you looking for the newest songs, you may want to head to the twitter charts. Here, anyone can vote for there favourite track by featuring it in a tweet, giving a much more live updated chart and more new and (possibly) music you haven't heard before.

There is a reason that the majority of Music Directors for large radio stations here in Australia use this site to predict the next big tracks, so if you want a sneak peak into what your probably going to here on a radio soon, Hype Machine will give you an interesting insight.

Cracked.com - Best of the Web

Cracked.com - The funniest site in the history of man-kind - according to them.......and me.

For anyone that knows me personally knows that this site is the main thing that got me through doing solo breakfast shows on community radio, so you know it's damn good. Brilliantly presented, it has some of the funniest articles on the web. The pieces are hilariously written by a myriad of writers from across the globe. It's video collection, even though small, features some hilarious short films either shot by Cracked.com or sister sites.

The site boasts that it has been 'America's only humour and video site since 1958' (1958 being the first publication of it's former self, Cracked magazine), though it seems to have come along in leaps and bounds since it's first appearance on paper as basically a MAD magazine rip off.

A site definitely worth checking out, but I would steer clear if at work as you may find your productivity levels hitting rock bottom.
